Do I need to create a business entity?
No, you don't need to create a business entity (like an LLC or corporation) to use Steamline or publish on Steam.
Publishing as an individual
You can publish your game through Steamline as an individual. We just need you to fill out one tax form:
- US developers: W-9 form with your SSN or EIN
- International developers: W-8BEN form with your tax identification number
Your legal name will be used for tax reporting, but your game can be published under any studio name you choose.
What about liability protection?
While you don't need a business entity to publish, some developers choose to form an LLC or corporation for liability protection. This is a personal decision about protecting your personal assets, not a publishing requirement.
If you're just starting out, we recommend publishing your game first and considering a business entity later when you're generating meaningful revenue. You can always form an LLC down the road.
What you need to get started with Steamline:
- Personal identification for tax purposes
- One completed tax form (W-9 or W-8BEN)
That's it. No business registration, no complicated paperwork, no LLC needed.
